  105. G                                 OVERVIEW

  108. Y      Easy Presentation Graphics is a powerful tool that generates graphic
  109.        represenations of numerical data. It works basically like this:
  110.  
  111. W      1. SELECT THE TYPE OF CHART YOU WANT TO GENERATE (Column, Stacked
  112.           Column, Deviation, Bar, Line, Step, Pie, Donut, Pictograph,
  113.           Percentage Bar, Area, or Text).
  114.  
  115.        2. SELECT THE DATA YOU WANT TO USE. (This can be generated by
  116.           Easy Presentation Graphics, or loaded from existing data from other
  117.           popular programs such as Lotus 123, dBase, and Word Perfect).
  118.  
  119.        3. CUSTOMIZE THE CHART. (A variety of options are provided in the
  120.           specialized Option Menus.)
  121.  
  122.        4. PRINT THE CHART.
  123.  
  124.        NOTE: The Escape [Esc] key will take you out of any operation which
  125.              you have completed or want to stop, and draw/redraw the screen.
  126.              At the Main Menu, [Esc] has the same function as [F10] Quit.

  130. G                             CREATING NEW DATA

  133. W    To create new data to graph:
  134.  
  135.        1. Press [F4] from the Main Menu to display the Data Menu.
  136.  
  137.        2. Press [RETURN] or [1] for Keyboard.

  139.        3. If there is already data in the Spreadsheet, press [5] to Clear it.
  140.  
  141.        4. Move the cursor with the arrow keys to where you want to enter data.
  142.  
  143.        5. Press [1] to go to the Entry Mode, and type data in columns.
  144.  
  145.        6. Press [TAB] to switch to next column and repeat until finished.
  146.  
  147.        7. Press [Esc] to return to the Data Menu.

  149.        8. Press [ENTER] to return to the Main Menu and draw the graph.

  151.        9. To edit the data, go back to the Spreadsheet.

  155. G                            SPREADSHEET IMPORT

  158. W      Easy Presentation Graphics can use data produced from a variety of
  159.        popular spreadsheet programs. Worksheet files from Lotus 123,
  160.        Multiplan's SYLK files, and DIF files are all are supported.
  161.  
  162.        Users of Lotus 123 Release 1 should select WKS-File; for Release 2,
  163.        WK1-File. The EPG Spreadsheet will accept Lotus files up to 64 K in
  164.        file size (dependent on PC memory). If a worksheet is larger than
  165.        50 x 50, the additional area will be clipped when loaded as a EPG
  166.        file. The original worksheet file will remain unchanged.
  167.  
  168.        SYLK and DIF files that are 15 K or less can be loaded directly into
  169.        the EPG Spreadsheet by using the SYLK-File or DIF-File choices on
  170.        the Data Menu. Larger SYLK and DIF files should be loaded with the
  171.        appropriate External Conversion Utility supplied on Diskette 1.
  172.  
  173.        NOTE: We recommend rounding your spreadsheet cell data to six digits,
  174.        (e.g. 4356.7) as variations between a similar range of large values
  175.        cannot be distinguished in a chart, and will be truncated. To show the
  176.        exact values, simply enter Thousands or Millions etc. on the Y-Axis.

  183. Y      Easy Presentation Graphics can use ASCII data from any source as long
  184.        as its in the correct format. Each record ends with a [RETURN] and
  185.        each field is separated by a comma. The records must be in this order:

  2208. W       Easy Presentation Graphics can output to laser printers at resolutions
  2209.         up to 300 dots per inch (300 dpi).  The higher the dpi value is, the
  2210.         better the resolution of the print. The size of the image which can be
  2211.         printed at 300 dpi resolution, however, depends on the laser printer's
  2212.         memory (RAM).  The HP Laserjet, for example, only has enough memory to
  2213.         print a quarter page image at 150 dpi; larger images can only be
  2214.         printed at 100 or 75 dpi.  The following table illustrates the dpi
  2215.         resolutions attainable on the standard LaserJet+ (with 512K of RAM).

  2230. G                          POSITIONING CHARTS AND TEXT

  2233. W       With Easy Presentation Graphics, you can incorporate charts into
  2234.         letters and other documents without needing to cut-and-paste,
  2235.         or use complex page composition software.  We recommend that, before
  2236.         attempting to mix charts and text, you print out a copy of a typical
  2237.         letter and a draft copy of your chart with appropriate size and
  2238.         position selections.  BOTH should be printed on the same printer that
  2239.         you intend to use for the final copy.
  2240.  
  2241.         Then compare the two pages to see which area is occupied by the
  2242.         chart.  If you load your letter into your word processor at the same
  2243.         time, you can see the line and character positions which you will
  2244.         need to reserve for your chart.  Make sure that you record these
  2245.         positions, to avoid having to repeat this process.

  2247.         Then reformat your document to allow space for your chart.  Print
  2248.         the document, load Easy Presentation Graphics, and print your chart
  2249.         with the appropriate print specifications onto the same page.  You may
  2250.         print the chart first, and the text second.  If so, turn EPG's
  2251.         Page Eject off to avoid re-feeding the paper into the printer.

  2255. G                            PRINTING PICTOGRAPHS

  2258. W       Each picture symbol in a pictograph represents a value that is
  2259.         constant throughout that chart (e.g. Psymbol = 7).  Thus a portion
  2260.         of a symbol will equal a fraction of 7, and a stack of symbols will
  2261.         equal a multiple of seven.  This structure makes Easy Presentation
  2262.         Graphics have to deal with some complex calculations when printing
  2263.         with some of EPG's size, orientation, and positioning options.
  2264.  
  2265.         To ensure that your pictograph is always printed with optimum
  2266.         proportions, Easy Presentation Graphics will sometimes assign a new
  2267.         value to the picture symbol in your chart.  What this means in
  2268.         practice is that where formerly, for example, your picture symbol
  2269.         was assigned a value of seven, and one of the stacks of symbols
  2270.         consisted of 3 symbols (= 21 total), the new value assignment might
  2271.         be five, and that stack might contain four and a fifth symbols (= 21
  2272.         total).  As you can see, your original data value of 21 has not
  2273.         changed.
